Late last year, Brown CS faculty member Vasileios (Vasilis) Kemerlis won the Top Reviewer Award for his work as a program committee member for the 2023 ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CSS), the 30th anniversary of the conference, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. This award is given annually to the most influential reviewers for work and service provided at CCS, which is ACM’s flagship conference on computer security.
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP) is the organization’s flagship conference in computer systems and widely considered one of the world’s two top venues in systems research. Every year, their Student Research Competition allows undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their work to the community, and this year, Brown CS student Artem Agvanian and alum Hannah Gross (now a doctoral student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) won prizes for their work.
Every year at the Symposium on Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence (EAAI), the Assocation for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) awards the AAAI/EAAI Outstanding Educator award, widely considered the highest honor in the field of AI education. This year's recipients were Brown CS faculty member Michael Littman and his longtime collaborator, Charles Isbell of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Last month, Brown CS alum John Stasko (now Regents Professor in the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech) received the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (IEEE VGTC).
The
18th Association for Computing Machinery Asia Conference on Computer and Communications Security was held from July 10 to July 14 in Melbourne, Australia. Bestowed annually, the

Joshua Yang, a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, won first-place in the Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (ACM CHI 2023) Student Research Competition (SRC) held in Hamburg, Germany, for his research with Jeff Huang, Brown CS faculty member and researcher in human-computer interaction. Joshua’s winning research, “Animated Patterns: Applying Dynamic Patterns to Vector Illustrations”, was accepted for publication this February and competed against other accepted SRC submissions at the conference in April.
Faculty member Malte Schwarzkopf, head of the ETOS and Systems groups of Brown University’s Department of Computer Science (Brown CS), has been chosen by Brown’s graduating senior class to receive the Barrett Hazeltine Citation. The other recipient was James Morone, John Hazen White Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Political Science and Urban Studies.
Every year, the International Conference on Research in Computational Molecular Biology (
RECOMB) bestows its Test of Time Award on regular or special issue papers presented at the conference that were influential in providing a major stepping stone for theoretical advances in computational biology and their applications in molecular biology and medicine. R. Iris Bahar, Brown Professor Emerita of Engineering, Professor Emerita of Computer Science, and Adjunct Professor of Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2024 Undergraduate Teaching Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
At this year’s EuroSys conference held in Rome, Italy, a paper by Brown CS faculty member Malte Schwarzkopf was recognized with a 2023 Test of Time award. The paper, “Omega: flexible, scalable schedulers for large computer clusters,” was co-authored by Malte (as the lead author), Andy Konwinski of UC Berkeley, and Michael Abd-El-Malek and John Wilkes of Google. Bestowed annually, the award recognizes one or more papers published at EuroSys ten years before deemed the most influential papers of that conference.
