Brown CS Student Mattie Ji Is A Runner-Up For The Schafer Prize For Excellence In Mathematics By An Undergraduate Woman

Almost twenty-five years ago, the Association for Women in Mathematics established the Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize, to be awarded to an undergraduate woman for excellence in mathematics. This year, Brown CS student Mattie Ji, a senior majoring in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science, was the prize's runner-up.

Yong Zheng-Xin, Cristina Menghini, And Stephen Bach Earn A Socially Responsible Language Modelling Research (SoLaR) Best Paper Award

At the recent conference, work ("Low-Resource Languages Jailbreak GPT-4") from Brown CS PhD student Yong Zheng-Xin, postdoctoral researcher Cristina Menghini of Brown’s Data Science Institute, and Brown CS faculty member Stephen Bach was selected from 121 submissions to receive the workshop's Best Paper Award.

Vasileios Kemerlis Receives The 2023 ACM CCS Top Reviewer Award

Late last year, Brown CS faculty member Vasileios (Vasilis) Kemerlis won the Top Reviewer Award for his work as a program committee member for the 2023 ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CSS), the 30th anniversary of the conference, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. This award is given annually to the most influential reviewers for work and service provided at CCS, which is ACM’s flagship conference on computer security.

 

Brown CS Student Artem Agvanian And Alum Hannah Gross Earn First And Second Place SOSP Student Research Honors

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP) is the organization’s flagship conference in computer systems and widely considered one of the world’s two top venues in systems research. Every year, their Student Research Competition allows undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their work to the community, and this year, Brown CS student Artem Agvanian and alum Hannah Gross (now a doctoral student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) won prizes for their work. 

Michael Littman Receives The AAAI/EAAI Patrick Henry Winston Outstanding Educator Award

Every year at the Symposium on Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence (EAAI), the Assocation for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) awards the AAAI/EAAI Outstanding Educator award, widely considered the highest honor in the field of AI education. This year's recipients were Brown CS faculty member Michael Littman and his longtime collaborator, Charles Isbell of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ntousakis, Kemerlis, Vasilakis, And Collaborators Win The ACM ASIACCS ‘23 Distinguished Paper Award

The 18th Association for Computing Machinery Asia Conference on Computer and Communications Security was held from July 10 to July 14 in Melbourne, Australia. Bestowed annually, the ACM ASIACCS Distinguished Paper Award is given to outstanding papers presented at the conference. Brown CS faculty members Vasileios Kemerlis and Nikos Vasilakis and visiting research fellow Grigoris Ntousakis received the 2023 award for their paper, “BinWrap: Hybrid Protection Against Native Node.js Add-Ons”. Brown CS Student Joshua Yang Earns First-Place At The ACM CHI ‘23 Student Research Competition

Joshua Yang, a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, won first-place in the Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (ACM CHI 2023) Student Research Competition (SRC) held in Hamburg, Germany, for his research with Jeff Huang, Brown CS faculty member and researcher in human-computer interaction. Joshua’s winning research, “Animated Patterns: Applying Dynamic Patterns to Vector Illustrations”, was accepted for publication this February and competed against other accepted SRC submissions at the conference in April.

 

 

Malte Schwarzkopf Receives A Hazeltine Citation For Excellence In Teaching, Guidance, And Support

Faculty member Malte Schwarzkopf, head of the ETOS and Systems groups of Brown University’s Department of Computer Science (Brown CS), has been chosen by Brown’s graduating senior class to receive the Barrett Hazeltine Citation. The other recipient was James Morone, John Hazen White Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Political Science and Urban Studies.
