For the second time since the honor’s inauguration last year, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)’s Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN) has presented its Distinguished Educator Award to recognize distinguished educational contributions to the Programming Languages community. The winners for 2023 are Brown CS faculty members Kathi Fisler and Shriram Krishnamurthi, who received the honor on June 19 at the 44th ACM SIGPLAN Conference on Programming Language Design and Implementation (PLDI 2023).

“Professors Fisler and Krishnamurthi have made significant and sustained pedagogical contributions to Programming Languages over the last two decades,” the award committee writes. “Both of them have a long track record of being SIGPLAN community leaders in programming languages education, from writing well-known Programming Languages textbooks to making significant contributions to Computer Science Curriculum Guidelines. Together, Shriram and Kathi have been a driving force in advancing computer science education. With Emmanuel Schanzer, they are co-founders of Bootstrap (https://www.bootstrapworld.org/), a national program that uses functional programming to integrate data science and computing into math, science, and social studies classes for students in primary and secondary schools. In recent years, their research has focused on various questions in the interplay between semantics and computing education; their chapter in the 2019 Cambridge Handbook of Computing Education Research bridges the two and lists several open problems at the intersection. In short, their innovative work has paved the way for a new generation of computer scientists and teachers and has helped to make computing education more accessible, engaging, and effective for all.”
