The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a research and development agency of the U.S. Department of Defense responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military, has just named Brown CS Professor Theophilus A. Benson to its Information Science and Technology (ISAT) Study Group. His three-year term begins this summer.

DARPA established the 30-member group in 1987 to support its technology offices and provide continuing independent assessment of the state of advanced information science and technology as it relates to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Theo's research interests include improving the performance and availability of computer networks and systems, with a focus on Software Defined Networking, data centers, clouds, and configuration management. In the past, he's conducted large scale measurement studies of data centers and enterprise networks, and he's developed several networked and distributed systems, one of which was purchased in 2012. Most recently, he delivered a keynote at the International Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics, and Networking and co-authored the EuroSys 2019 Best Student Paper.
