HCRI Speaker Series Announced

Brown University’s Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative (HCRI) is proud to feature a multidisciplinary Speaker Series that will showcase diverse and groundbreaking research undertaken by leaders in science, technology, design, and impact of robotics on society.
The talks will be held on Wednesdays from 12:00-1:30 p.m. in Barus and Holley Room 190 throughout the fall. In addition, members of the HCRI network and their visitors will give research talks announced on the same calendar and mailing list.
Our first speaker will be Professor Manuela Veloso of Carnegie Mellon University on September 18, 2013. She will present on the topic “Symbiotic Autonomy: Robots, Humans, and the Web.”
The Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative aims to address the issues and challenges of robotics and society through building on Brown’s interdisciplinary strengths across the physical, life, and social sciences, as well as the humanities.The initiative has a commitment to three goals:
•Understanding societal needs to explore problems in society that can be resolved with the help of scientific and technical solutions.
•Advancing human-centered technology to develop next-generation robots that enhance quality of life and foster productivity by learning from, teaching, supporting, and collaborating with humans.
•Understanding societal impact to assess the economic, social, legal, ethical, and policy ramifications of new robotic technologies.
