Artemis

What is Artemis?

The Artemis Project is a five-week summer program directed by four undergraduate women at Brown University. Artemis introduces rising 9th-grade girls to computer science, targeting them at the critical age when the disparity between males and females in the sciences becomes most pronounced.

The program is free; students have the option to obtain free RIPTA bus passes, and lunch is provided every day.

When/where does Artemis take place?

Artemis 2013 will be in session from July 1 - August 2. We meet on the Brown University campus, in the Computer Science building (the CIT), which is located at 115 Waterman St. Our program will be held Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.

What will I learn?

We will spend part of each day in a computer lab, learning computer literacy through the use of programs such as Microsoft Powerpoint and Adobe Photoshop, or learning the basics of computer programming through web design in HTML and CSS, and languages like Scratch and Python. We will also spend part of each day in a classroom, where students will be introduced to the more theoretical aspects of computer science. During this portion of the day, we will cover topics such as Cryptography and Artificial Intelligence through games and other hands-on activities. When the lesson plan is finalized, we will update the website with more information. For detailed information about last year's curriculum, please see our lessons page .

What else will I do at camp?

Artemis will also have a variety of guest speakers, to be determined in the first few weeks of June. They will include representatives from our industry sponors, Brown professors and researchers, and other prominent women in the sciences. For a complete listing of last summer's speakers, please visit our lessons page .

In addition, we will go on field trips to the Wheeler School Ropes Course, the Boston Museum of Science, the MIT Museum and Microsoft, and the United Skates of America. You will get to hear speakers from companies like Google and from Brown's computer science department.

And don't worry, we will not be sitting at the computers all day. We will have lots of fun outdoor activities, including a field day and a tour of Brown! Finally, at the end of the program, we will hold a special event where all students will be able to present the work they have done over the course of the program to their families and to Brown faculty members.

By the end of the program, you will have had a rigorous introduction to many different applications of computer science and technology, and to the creative way of thinking and problem-solving that is prominent in the field of computer science. You will leave Artemis with both the practical skills and the conceptual background that will help allow you to follow your interests, in whatever direction they may lead you.

Who can apply?

Creative and motivated girls who are curious about math, science, or computers and are entering 9th grade in the fall following the summer they will attend Artemis are qualified to apply. No prior computer experience is necessary!
