The entire top-level design presentation schedule has been posted to Project Info.

Quote February 20, 1999.
"The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena, who strive valiently; who know the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spend themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best, know the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst, if they fail, fail while daring greatly, so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat."
--Theodore Roosevelt

Top-Level Design Presentations February 19, 1999.

The following people are being arbitrarily picked to present their designs on Wednesday, 2/24. You'll have 15 minutes each, so do some dry runs, and practice at being concise. If you want to run your presentation by me, I'll be holding office hours Monday 3-5 as usual. We'll figure out the rest of the schedule later.

  1. jun
  2. mip
  3. lenny

Note that *all* of your top-level designs are due Wednesday via electronic hand-in.

Handin Program February 12, 1999.

Handin program should work now, so don't email me anything, just turn it in on-line as specified by the Handin Instructions handout.

Presentation Schedule February 12, 1999.

Presentation schedule for the specifications is posted in the Project Info section.

Specifications Deadline February 10, 1999.

The deadline for specifications document is pushed back to Monday (2/15). We welcome any early submissions, however, since we still want to do presentations on Monday.

This Week's Reading February 8, 1999.

The next reading assignment is coming up soon. There will be a short 5 min quiz so be sure to do the reading. Also, as announced on the first day, the schedule has a small typo. Where it says "WSC ?", it should now read "WSC 5", so chapter 5 of Writing Solid Code is to be read as well. The schedule on the web page has been updated.

Presentation Schedule and Project Requirements February 3, 1999.

The presentation schedule is posted in the Project Info section.

NOTE: The Monday and Wednesday presentations will be Lubrano (477 CIT).

Project requirements are also posted there.

First Handin Was Due January 30, 1999.

If you haven't turned it in, you now have 10% of a letter grade taken off your final course grade. Another 10% will be taken off if I don't get yours by 5pm, Monday (2/1/99). The proposal is just a project title and a short description. A short description can be only a couple sentences, although you can write much more than that if you wish.

To check whether I've received your project proposal, go to the course web page's Project Info section. If your name isn't anywhere there, you have a few options:

  • You join an existing group. I would need an email from on of the group members stating that you are in their group by 5pm, Monday to avoid further consequences.
  • You give me an interesting proposal by 5pm, Monday, as described above. By the way, you're not bound to that proposal. In fact, when the first round of presentations happen, you don't have to present on that proposal if you've changed your mind by then.
  • You give me an interesting proposal along with a good excuse. For example, I was in the hospital this past week. Or, I just signed for the class 2 hours ago. Or, there was a mistake, I actually sent it to you. You still need to give it to me by 5pm, Monday; you just won't get 10% of a letter grade taken off.

One last note: The Assessment section of your syllabus says you'll be docked for every class meeting that it's late. I'm giving you a 5pm deadline instead of 9am because I'm being nice, and it is the beginning of the semester, after all. In the future, it will be around 9am.

Project Info Section Updated January 30, 1999.

We posted the project groups we have so far to the Project Info section of the website.

Office Hours Changed January 29, 1999.

My office hours have changed. They're now Monday, 15:00-1700 and Thursday 18:00-20:00, or by appointment. Both office hours are now held in the 2nd floor TA rooms.

Sample Quiz Questions January 29, 1999.

Sample quiz questions are posted for the readings due on Monday. The actual quiz on Monday will only be five minutes long. There are in the Miscellaneous part of the Documents page. You can also view them here, in PDF, Postscript, or HTML formats.

Textbooks on Reserve January 28, 1999.

One copy of each of the required texts will be available on reserve from the Sciences Library by Monday. They are on 3-hour reserve. After a couple of weeks, they'll be placed on 24-hour reserve.

One copy of the recommended text, Writing Solid Code by Steve Maguire will also be on reserve by Monday. It will be on 24-hour reserve.

    Jimmy's Office Hours today January 28, 1999.

Due to a faculty candidate interview, I'll be unable to make it to my office hours on Thursday, 1/27, until 15:30.

    Course List January 11, 1999.

This is the pre-reg course list we've got so far. You might want to start making friends, and scoping out potential teammates. Those aspiring to be project leads might want to start looking at what type of group composition they want to have (i.e. at least one UNIX guru, someone who knows make files and someone with a car, etc...).
