Project Ideas/Domains
Profile Unification Software
This project would be one to implement some sort of software tying together
management of what are normally disparate sources (and sinks) of information.
Examples of tools which could be unified are:
- Exchange
- Google Calendar
- when2meet
- Brown Alumni Profiles
- Facebook
- LinkedIn
- etc.
Most of the information stored and shared in these places overlaps a great
deal, and being able to aggregate and manage all of these sources from a single
place would be a boon to those who deal with multiple of these sites and tools
on a regular basis.
Student Course-Related Software
This is another broad category of projects. Possible ideas include:
- From Russell Taylor: "A web-based, virtual concentration adviser. The
user would enter their semester standing and the classes they've already
taken (which the user would theoretically only have to do once) and choose
a potential concentration. The program would then distribute all of the
concentration's required classes over the user's remaining semesters in
some kind of color-coded shopping cart similar to Mocha's and leave space
for electives. The user would be free to drag and drop their classes from
semester to semester with the usual restrictions (ie 5 or less classes per
semester, classes cannot precede their prerequisites) and fill up the
remaining spaces with electives."
- A stylish, usable replacement frontend for the Critical Review, possibly
including other features such as course recommendations based on other
courses enjoyed, statistical analysis of survey results, or integration
with Banner and other tools at Brown. Requested by several people,
including the Critical Review staff.
- Improving over course-registration, grade handling, etc., on Banner.
Any of these projects have a great deal of room to integrate with Banner (or
potentially Mocha) to some degree.
