Want to Learn: Project Management as applied to software development; large-scale software design based on user-requirements.
Other Goals: Improve my programming skills and software development in a team environment.
Role and Skills:
- 19 years of US Navy experience both as an officer and Chief Petty Officer (I've directly led as many as 45 individuals, and for a period, led 8 managers who in turn had a collective 2000 bilingual (Japanese) subordinates (I was the Repair Officer at the Ship Repair Facility/Japan Regional Maintenance Activity in Yokosuka, Japan).
- BS in Information Systems with an emphasis on System Analysis/Project Management.
- Worked on several projects (non-CS related) as both team leader and team member
- Database experience (academic and practical)
- Used to working in teams to achieve a common goal.
Relevant CS Classes: Equivalence of CS 17, 18, 32 (Univ Maryland), CS 127, CS 149, CS 295T (two-person team developed a CEP application for dynamic radar data display based on rules and access controls)
Other Experience:
Project Management (undergrad), Systems Design and Analysis (IT Manager/Systems Analyst viewpoint) as an undergrad.
LEAN Green Belt (the Naval Sea Systems version of Six-Sigma Green Belt)
Worked in small, globally connected (i.e. Internet) teams for academic projects as an undergrad. For three such projects, I was the project manager.
I am experienced in (and have licensed copies of) MS Project, MS Visio, PowerPoint and I am actively learning OmniGraffle (I'm a Mac convert).
Familiar with the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge, published by PMI, the industry-standard for Project Management (the same organization that offers the Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certifications.
