Official Welcome

If you're interested in math, science, or engineering... you will certainly benefit from an understanding of computers and programming. Brown's Computer Science Department is among the top dozen computer science departments in the country and offers a range of courses from intrdocutory programming to artificial intelligence, graphics, algorithms, computer systems and robotics.

This summer program will prepare you to excel in computer science courses at Brown by giving you a broad introduction to the department and teaching you valuable skills. No computer background necessary.

You will learn:

This program also includes:

Lectures on historical and cultrual aspects of computer science by CS Department Professors, including Andy van Dam who teaches the introductory course, CS15, Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming and Computer Science. Professor van Dam was a founder of the CS department and was its first chairman. He is Director of the Brown University Graphics Research Group and the NSF Center for Graphics and Visualization.

Tours of the different research labs in the department as well as related labs.

Field Trips to places such as the Boston Science Museum and the Computer Museum, also in Boston.

Lab time in the Department's Sun Lab, named for its (brand new!) 63 Sun UltraSPARCs.

Time to meet with undergraduates and Professors in informal settings.

You will be taught by and interact with many undergraduates, experiencing first hand the unique role that students play in the department. You will see and meet with undergraduates working in research labs and learn about the undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) system. At Brown, undergraduates assist in virtually all computer science courses. Many undergrads TA a course before they graduate.

Whether you decide to major in CS or take courses to further your work in other disciplines, this summer program will let you walk into the first day of an introductory computer science class feeling confident and at home in the department.

Come prepared to learn in a supportive and encouraging environment led by undergraduate TAs, then join other Balfour students for field trips, events and parties.
