The specific is always more compelling, frightening, disturbing and moving than the general. Kertzer understands this, and uses a particular incident to illustrate the Catholic church's policy of forced conversion. The book presents a cool, rational march through a space of unbearable claustrophobia. Chilling, and therefore important history.
