Morphing
(Image Metamorphosis)
Morphing: 2D images are warped and faded to create illusion of metamorphosis.
We've seen how interpolation can change shape of mathematically described lines and curves (as in draw-type programs), but what about shape transitions between objects difficult or impossible to model realistically (e.g., faces, animals, represented by pixmaps)?
Need a way to achieve similar effects in paint-type programs, using digitized photographs, or video
1930-1950: The Monster Film Fade
Monster films like Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde required on-screen smooth transformations. Here's one way they did it:
- had Dr. Jeckly stand perfectly still, filmed a few minutes of this
- got same actor re-made-up as Mr. Hyde, in exactly same position, filmed for a few seconds
- sent film to photo lab where technicians created a cross-fade between the two sets of images
- voila! A monster transformation
