Activities and Attractions
Events
-
There's a
Gallery Night during the workshop (July 21). Excellent art,
entertainment, free admission to the galleries, free trolley,
... what more could you ask for?
- There will be a
WaterFire
a few days before the workshop (July 16). (The schedule grows
as they keep getting new sponsors, so
please check their site for the latest information.)
-
Our
Restaurant Weeks run July 10-23. Providence has an
excellent restaurant scene thanks, especially, to the
presence of Johnson and Wales's College of Culinary Arts here.
-
There is often a
Black Ships Festival in Newport around the same time.

be inconsistent or outdated.
-
There is supposed to be a
Tall Ships Festival in Newport July 6-9, 2012 in Newport.

Organizations
-
AS220 is Providence's hip
cultural collective, responsible for much that is delightful
and eclectic in the downtown arts scene. Their pages list
several arts events.
-
The Trinity Rep is
Providence's highly respected theater company.
- The Paw Sox, located in
Pawtucket, a few miles north of campus, are the AAA minor league
team for the Boston Red Sox. They feature future stars, as well
as major league players on their way back from the DL.
They have several home games during the workshop.
-
Even though people at Brown might not want to admit it,
Providence wouldn't be half as cool without the presence of
RISD, the Rhode Island
School of Design.
Their museum
is worth visiting.
Places
-
Providence
has a lot to offer, as does
Rhode Island
(though are you sure you wouldn't prefer a
slightly more irreverent and far more entertaining guide?).
- The
East Bay Bike Path
is an extremely pleasant 14 mile path from Providence
down to the land's end in Bristol, reserved for biking,
walking, rollerblading and other recreation. It offers scenic
vistas of Narragansett Bay, and passes through pleasant towns
and pretty state parks. Note: There's a bike rental
place just a few blocks from the dorm and the workshop
location.
-
Newport
is a pretty town with its own set of summer activities. You
can drive to Newport in under an hour, or
use public transit.
-
Boston
is another pretty town nearby with some summer activities.
You can get there in under an hour by
bus,
Amtrak, or
commuter rail.
Publications
- The
Providence Phoenix
is the premier free, alternate newspaper of this area. They
provide excellent listings of activities about town.
(We have a few more such papers around,
but they're too cool to run Web sites.)
- Oh yeah, we also have a mainstream paper:
The Providence Journal,
affectionately known as the ``Projo''. They too provide
listings of activities.
