We have arranged for on-campus housing at the Vartan Gregorian Quad, only a few blocks away from the workshop location. (The street address is 101 Thayer St.) The Quad is the newest of campus housing, and features comfortable rooms with air-conditioning. The rooms are singles with community bathrooms. Each room in a standard dormitory is equipped with one or more of the following: single-sized bed, pillow, desk and chair, dresser, bookcase, closet and overhead light. Bathrooms (toilets) are located on each floor.
The rooms cost $50/night. The rate includes linen, towels, pillow, blanket, and hand soap; cleaning of bathrooms twice a week, kitchens, lounges and common areas and removal of trash from common areas.
To apply for housing, please notify Stephen Bloch. The deadline for doing so is July 8, 2011. Please also notify him of your planned arrival date and time. This is a firm deadline. If you do not notify him and get an acknowledgment, there may not be any housing for you!
If you are funded, the cost of your room will automatically be deducted from your reimbursement. If you are not being funded, you will be reimbursing Adelphi for the cost of housing. Please discuss the details with Stephen Bloch.
The official check in time for the dorms is from 1pm-midnight on July 16th. The check in will take place directly at the dorms. (Between 1pm-5pm, check-in at the dorm. Between 5pm and midnight, check-in will take place at the desk for the Inn at Brown, which in the same building, just down the hall from the dorm check-in.) Please see below for arrivals after midnight.
Please note that you absolutely must check out of the dorms by July 24th. If you want to spend time in Providence as a tourist after the workshop (and it's definitely worth considering, since there's a lot happening), you'll have to find other accommodation.
You may find it convenient to bring a bar of soap, a drinking
glass, and an alarm clock. Also, while the dorms provide free
campus and local calls, you must
The dorms offer their own parking at $15/car/night. The parking is in lot 58 and is located at the corner of Charlesfield and Brook streets. The Conference Assistant will give you a hang tag for your car that you must display in it to avoid getting a ticket. Please reserve your parking when filling out your application form.
The check-in counter is open until midnight, every night. After midnight, guests must use the yellow call box immediately outside the entrance (to the left) to contact Brown Public Safety. The instructions are taped to the glass facing the guest from inside the front of the building.
Tell Public Safety you're a late arrival and that you're attending a conference. Public Safety will then let you into the building and give you your key packet. That will get you into your reserved room.
If you arrive late enough that you need to call the police to let you in, also inform the police officer about your car, so they don't ticket it. Then get the hang tag from the dorm personnel first thing in the morning and place it in the car right away. Don't park on the streets overnight, since this is forbidden by the City of Providence.
The cost to use the gym on campus is $7 per day. You can pay right at the door.
Parking is very limited on campus. There are just enough visitor spots all across campus to handle the number of drive-ins we're going to get, so if there's any chance you can carpool, please do so. The main visitor.s lot is located at Brook and Waterman Streets. Please pay at the pay station and put the stub in your front window (parking is $15/day).
Most of the on-street parking near the department is limited to 2-3 hours. There is some all-day parking a few blocks away (but remember—no all-night parking!). Some is on Hope Street, near the Day Care Center. Other streets with some all-day parking include Charlesfield and Young Orchard. There's also unrestricted space on Hope just south of Lloyd and on Lloyd just east of Hope (in front of the Moses Brown School). Each of these is fewer than ten minutes by walk from the workshop location.
There are no hotels immediately next to the Brown campus. The only hotel-like accommodation is the Inn at Brown. Rooms here run at $120/night, and are air-conditioned. We will soon be told how many rooms are available here.
While hotels in the city tend to be quite expensive, there are several standard hotel and motel chains just a few miles away. You may find it very economical to share a room with another teacher, and rent a car so you can get to campus and back. For hotel prices, look at on-line travel sites such as Orbitz, Travelocity and Expedia. If you want to share a room, notify Shriram and he'll tell you about other teachers who want to share one, too.
If you are concerned about distance, you can use an on-line map service to determine how far the hotel is from the venue. For this purpose, use the street address "115 Waterman St, Providence, RI" as the destination. One thing the maps won't tell you is that there is a small but steep hill between downtown and the Brown campus; however, there is also an inexpensive and fun trolley that can take you from downtown to campus and back. If you're concerned about the accessibility of a particular hotel you like, feel free to ask me. If you are unable to find hotels and need our help, let me know.
