Abstract: Database functions are very useful for business applications. But, inspite of many efforts in the past 15 years, many data-intensive applications still do not use database systems. Therefore a more radical shift of paradigms is needed: We must provide database functions to non-database data. We must carefully evolve from our concepts such as transactions and extend them in order to cope with external data and their applications.

General Terms: External objects; Non-database data; Exporting database functions; Composite transaction management
