What is it?

The Artemis Project is a four week summer program for rising ninth graders designed to enhance self-confidence and build leadership skills through hands-on experience with computers and discussion of important issues relevant to the lives of women and girls.

You can make a difference in girls' lives this summer by leading Artemis 1998.

We need two female undergrads to carry on this innovative program

(started in 1996 by female undergrads and continued last summer by Jessica Howell '98 and Saori Taichi '99)

Artemis 1996 & 1997

The initial pilot program involved eight 9th grade girls from Providence public schools. Last summer, Artemis ran for four weeks during the month of July and expanded to thirteen girls. Using he Swearer Center as a homebase, Artemis participants learned basic applications such as Microsoft Word, e-mail, Netscape, and Photoshop. They also learned how to design Web pages usin HTML. Artemis participants went on a number of field trips here at Brown and in the surrounding area in order to get exposure to other sides of technology-these trips included visits to a Ropes Course, to the Graphics Lab, the Hasbro Toy Factory, and the Computer Museum in Boston. Finally, Artemis participants engaged in a number of activities such as a workshop on assertiveness with Brown professor Barbara Tannenbaum, group building games, and structured discussions, designed to buid confidence, self-esteem and leadership skills.

Artemis 1998?

We are looking for two motivated, enthusiastic and hard working women to lead the Artemis Project for two months of full-time pay during the summer of 1998. Those interested should enjoy working with kids, have some basic computer know-how, fund-raising, facilitation and good organizational skills. You will be responsible for planning the logistics of the program, designing the curriculum and serving as teachers and role models for girls at a very impressionable age. Because this program is coordinated by two people, you will also need to work collaboratively, sharing successes as well as responsibilities with your partner. This may seem like a lot of responsibility and a lot of work, but the rewards are unparalleled. You will learn a tremendous amount and have the opportunity to forge relationships with some incredible kids.

If you are interested the leading the Artemis Project in the summer of 1998, applications can be found at the Swearer Center or at our Web site please contact Saori at 863-4990 or Jess at 5215972 or by email at Jessica_Howell@brown.edu or Saori_Taichi@brown.edu
