Boston University, BG: 119
The Manufacturing Engineering Department offers five courses using two-way video conferencing which constitute some of the required courses for their Master's degree.

Brigham Young University, BG: 120, PG: 50, 462
BYU offers more than 350 courses via independent study. They claim that the equivalent of more than 22,000 students are enrolled this way. However, only a few courses are listed in each of several areas on their web site. Each of these courses has a web site; some courses use supplementary materials such as CDs.

Colorado State University, BG: 158, PG: 92, 480
Courses are offered by correspondence, video, and the web. More than 530 degrees have been offered to students taking courses at a distance.

Cornell University, BG: 169, PG: 101
A certificate program is offered in food industry management. In 1997-98, 15 courses were offered to 80 students.

George Washington University, BG: 205
A Master of Science in Educational Technology Leadership is offered.

Georgia Institute of Technology, PG: 137
"In 1997-98, it offered 115 courses at a distance. In the fall of 1997, there were 400 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Course are delivered via television, videotapes, videoconferencing, World Wide Web" (PG)

Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, BG: 240
Ten entry level courses are offered.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, BG: 270, PG: 194, 498
MIT has a Center for Advanced Educational Services. CAES offers short-term courses, products for sale such as books and videotapes, as well as media and communication services. It also houses research groups that use technology relevant to education. Only four courses could be found that are offered for credit. The System Design and Management Program offers courses using video conferencing and videotapes.

Polytechnic University, BG: 328
They list a substantial number of courses offered using their locally developed I-CARE system for authoring and taking courses at a distance but many associated pages are incomplete.

Purdue University, BG: 332
Barron's Guide states that Purdue offers a Master of Science in Engineering degree as well as a Cohort Doctoral Program in Educational Administration. A quick scan of their web site lists only a few low-level courses offered for credit via distance learning.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, BG: 337, PG: 270
They have an award winning Professional and Distance Education program. Video broadcast has played a central role. Courses will be offered using video streaming on the web, a technology for fast transfer of video. (Only two courses are now available in this format.) They list 21 courses offered this semester. In the fall of 1997, more than 1,000 students were enrolled in various programs. More than 100 degrees were earned at a distance in 1996-97.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, BG: 344, PG: 277
Many courses are transmitted between sites using interactive video. The School of Communication, Information and Library Studies offers a few distance learning courses. In 1997-98, 17 courses were offered at a distance to 350 students.

Southern Methodist U., School of Engineering & Applied Science, BG: 365, PG: 301, 540
Master's degree programs in software engineering and telecommunications are offered via videotape and via NTU. They serve more than 600 graduate students.

Stanford University, PG: 312
In 1997-98 Stanford "offered 255 courses at a distance. In 1997, there were 1,500 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Courses are delivered via television, videotapes, videoconferencing, computer conferencing, print. ... Programs are currently open only to those employed by a company within the Stanford Instructional Television Network." (PG)

Syracuse University, BG: 380, PG: 322, 380
Independent study courses require "short periods of intensive on-site instruction with longer periods of home study, during which students and faculty members communicate at a distance by correspondence, telephone, fax, and computer. There are currently about 1,000 adults actively enrolled in eleven different degree programs..." (PG) Their web site lists sixteen introductory courses that will be offered this summer. They appear to use standard web technology to support chatting.

University of Colorado, Boulder BG: 410, PG: 358
"In 1997-98, it offered 149 courses at a distance. In the fall of 1997, there were 550 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Course are delivered via television, videotapes, videoconferencing." (PG) Three Master of Science and five Master of Engineering degrees are offered. The School of Engineering and Applied Science has offered distance learning courses for 15 years.

University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, BG: 416, PG: 371
"In 1997-98, it offered 175 courses at a distance. In the fall of 1997, there were 2,500 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Course are delivered via videotapes, videoconferencing, Word Wide Web, e-mail, print, satellite, audiographics conferencing." (PG) While Barron's Guide shows five Master of Science degrees, the UIUC web site lists only a handful of low-level courses offered for credit. Peterson's Guide states that more than 130 correspondence courses are also offered.

University of Maryland, College Park, BG: 422, PG: 382
"In 1997-98, it offered 342 courses at a distance. In the fall of 1997, there were 3,902 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Course are delivered via television, videotapes, interactive television, audiotapes, computer software, computer conferencing." (PG)

University of Massachusetts, Amherst, BG: 423, PG: 383
Many courses in math and engineering including computer science are broadcast via live video to a large number of companies in Massachusetts.

University of Michigan, BG: 424, PG: 385
The situation is similar to that at UMass except for the UAW-Ford University which offers four entry-level courses labeled explicitly as distance learning courses. In 1997-98 they taught 50 courses at a distance to 750 students.

University of Minnesota, BG: 425, PG: 385, 578
Many departments (perhaps 80) offer distance learning courses. A sampling shows that engineering and computer science each offer one course, economics offers six, german four, history 24, and russian four. Approximately 6,500 students are enrolled in 300 courses.

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, BG: 433
A small set of courses are offered online using e-mail and chat sessions. One or two courses are offered in each of about a dozen areas. The sample course page is far less sophisticated that pages in CS at Brown. University of Texas, Austin, BG: 442, PG: 412 "In 1997-98, it offered 195 courses at a distance. In the fall of 1997, there were 15,859 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Course are delivered via audiotapes, audioconferenceing, computer software, Word Wide Web, e-mail, print." (PG)

University of Utah, BG: 444, PG: 50, 588
Telecourses and independent study courses are offered. Both are identical to classroom-based courses in content.

University of Virginia, BG: 445, PG: 416
"In 1997-98, it offered 11 courses at a distance. In the fall of 1997, there were 309 students enrolled in distance learning courses. ... Course are delivered via videoconferenceing." (PG) Courses leading to the Master of Science in Engineering are offered via video broadcast over the internet.

University of Washington, BG: 446, PG: 417, 590
More than 120 self-paced and group start credit courses are offered.
