You may be familiar with the notion of Erdös number. The Erdös number of Paul Erdös (recently deceased) is 0. If you have written a joint paper with Erdös, then your Erdös number is 1. If you have written a joint paper with someone who has written a joint paper with Erdös, then your Erdös number is 2, etc.

Similarly, there is the notion of Elvis number. Elvis (reportedly deceased, though some dispute this) has an Elvis number of 0. If you have played or recorded with Elvis, then your Elvis number is 1, etc.

My Elvis number is 4. I have played guitar with Jeff Shallit , who has played guitar with Eric Bach. Eric once recorded with an engineer named Billy Porter, who previously worked with the King himself.
