NEIYA Region Ice Yacht Sailing and Ice Reports, last-report-at-top-ordering

Created from this data

Remember, conditions change daily. Ice boating is a dangerous sport. Don't sail alone. NEIYA is not responsible for conditions posted. The pilot is individually responsible for the evaluation of existing ice and sailing conditions at all times. This listing is provided as an unverified information resource for iceboaters in general and does not represent an NEIYA endorsement of any reported conditions. That said...

Here are the recent reports:

Conditions Reported for: Long Pond Lakeville, Freetown, MA

This report was submitted by: Jeff Soderholm, () Sail number: , Phone: 508 481 1011 The Condition Report for Long Pond Lakeville, Freetown is as follows:

We had a nice turnout with a variety of iceboating crafts at Long
Pond in Lakeville MA today. Winds were a steady 14 roughly with puffs

of 20 mph or more. Fast ice conditions. We will be going back for

more on Sunday for anyone looking to sail. Winds are forecast to be

light but the ice is clear enough it won't take much. The access at

the state boat ramp on rt 18 has greatly deteriorated due to the

strong spring sun and the access will probably only last thru the

weekend. I would recommend staying away from the whole eastern

shoreline now too. Strong sun, rocks and recent rains have taken

there toll on the ice along that side of the lake. Also and MOST

IMPORTANTLY there is a NEW pressure ridge running from the second

island with the light house and goes due WEST cutting off the

northern end of the lake. You can pick your way around this invisible

ridge on the far western edge but there is an almost two mile plate

to the south so we found no need. This ridge is impossible to see

from a DN at speed. We basically sailed to the lighthouse and tacked

around today.

Tomorrow will probably be the last blast on this ice as Monday looks

too windy and the access isn't going to last much longer.

Conditions Reported for: South Watuppa Pond, MA

This report was submitted by: John Hughes, () Sail number: , Phone: The Condition Report for South Watuppa Pond is as follows:

I drove over to Watuppa this morning. The surface is smooth -- sort of like it was last week -- but the plate that was up against the W side has clearly shifted a bit, and there's water at most places near the launch ramp. A couple of long boards to get over the wet parts, or launching from the SE corner of the parking area, seems like the best solution.

Out in the middle, there's some open water running N/S about half or 2/3 of the way over to the east side of the pond. There's probably open water elsewhere, too, so it needs a good scouting.

Conditions Reported for: Long Pond Lakeville Freetown, MA

This report was submitted by: Jeff Soderholm, () Sail number: , Phone: 508-481-1011 The Condition Report for Long Pond Lakeville Freetown is as follows:

Long Pond Lakeville Freetown MA received all rain from the storm on Wednesday. Initial reports indicate that the surface has improved from before the storm. This will require sharp runners for Saturday's predicted winds. Note the lake hasn't been sailed as of Friday morning yet so it would be prudent to scout the ice and NOT sail off alone. The hazards that existed prior such as the spring hole towards the north end and the pressure ridges by the points and islands have most likely enlarged. The access at the state boat ramp is deteriorating due to the strong spring sun and planks would be handy. You can still step on the ice to the right or north side of the ramp currently. Expect there to be sailing Saturday but first boats out need to scout all pressure ridges and proceed with caution.

Conditions Reported for: Sunapee, nh

This report was submitted by: will tuthill, (watuthill@verizon.net) Sail number: skimbat, Phone: 401-423-0567 The Condition Report for Sunapee is as follows:

Sunapee has a mix of snow and ice cover- NOT a destination for DNs at this time although Al Peterson has been sailing on it. The snow has blown away enough to make it sailable but better ice exists to the south.
We sailed for 31 miles on Staurday with skis and wings & kites.

The ice is over a foot and a half thick, rock hard, and forming day and night. The whole lake is solid and will be a place to watch when warm temps wreck the ice down south.

Conditions Reported for: Lake Wequaquet, MA

This report was submitted by: Jeff Brown, () Sail number: US 5232, Phone: The Condition Report for Lake Wequaquet is as follows:

Lake Wequaquet is in the best shape its seen in 10 years.
6-8" Black ice, no ridges shore to shore. I would grade this surface as a 9.5 and probably the best of ALL the available lakes to sail SE Massachusetts at this time, having checked and sailed the others.

The ice fisherman have left the only scars on this premium surface so far.

One hazard of small open water lead from Holly Point, East shoreline, which is normal for this site, and is marked with logs.

Only real down side of this lake is sandy shoreline launch which has migrated debris out 50 yrds.

Conditions Reported for: Watuppa, MA

This report was submitted by: John Hughes, () Sail number: , Phone: The Condition Report for Watuppa is as follows:

Ice is nice -- something like 8" everywhere we looked; quite hard, a bit pebbly, but nice. Near the launch ramp yesterday there were cracked plates over which the water had risen, so launching was a bit of a pain, and there was no way to roll a trailer onto the ice, alas. Still, with good footwear it wasn't a big problem to launch. I'll probably be back on Saturday.
You'll want sharp runners -- with yesterday's gusty winds, mine kept slipping...

Conditions Reported for: Lake Pocotopaug, East Hampton, CT

This report was submitted by: Bob Kilpatrick, (hosco6@aol.com) Sail number: MONGOOSE, Phone: 860-256-7527 The Condition Report for Lake Pocotopaug, East Hampton is as follows:

Conditions through the weekend look excellent. Balmy, high twenties, but light air forecast. South 1/2 of lake is still 40% thin styrofoam, should melt in with just one day of moderate temps, north 1/2 is 100% clear gray pebble, fast. With the exception of the few usual skinny spots, the entire lake is sailable, one known working crack.

Conditions Reported for: South Watuppa Pond, MA

This report was submitted by: John Hughes, () Sail number: DN 4550, Phone: The Condition Report for South Watuppa Pond is as follows:

Watuppa, where the ice looks perfectly beautiful, will be open tomorrow!

I called the Fall River DPW, who told me to talk to the Fall River Water Works, who referred me to someone higher up, who said "Sure! We can open up the access to the launch site...no problem. It'll be open at 6AM tomorrow, and it'll be open each day from about 6AM until sunset" (or something like that) "until the ice turns bad."

He also said that although they are drawing SOME water out of the pond, they'd shut down the gates so that the drainage would be minimal, which is nice.

The people to call when you want the launch site opened are

* Jim Terrio, Director of Water Department, 508 324 2335

* Tony Sullivan, Administrator of Public Utilities 508 324 2321

but you shouldn't need to call themfor the next few weeks, with any luck.

If, at some future date, you DO call these people and ask them to open the gates, please make a posting here so that they don't get 10 or 12 calls and start to hate iceboaters...

I hope to play hookey and be on the ice tomorrow mid-morning.

-John

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

In Fall River, MA, just south of I95. Take 24 S from 195, take first exit (Brayton Ave); go L at end of exit onto Brayton Ave. Go about 0.2mi, take 2nd left, onto Jefferson St. Follow Jefferson to the end -- about 0.8 miles to a very sharp curve (slow down!) just after a little bridge, and then about 0.4 miles further, through some gates, and into a parking/launching area.

Conditions Reported for: Long Pond Lakeville Freetown , MA

This report was submitted by: Jeff Soderholm, () Sail number: , Phone: 508-481-1011 The Condition Report for Long Pond Lakeville Freetown is as follows:

We had a tremendous turnout Sunday of iceboaters from far and wide with a great variety of iceboats in attendance at Long Pond Lakeville Freetown. Winds were gusty blowing a steady 15 with gusts up to 25 mph or more. Storm sails were the order of the day with newly Zambonied very fast ice conditions. Being Westerly winds you could reach one end of the lake to the other quite easily which is 3.85 miles. This was thanks to all pressure ridges being crossable but that situation is subject to change and all pressure ridges should be scouted prior to attempting crossing them if you go. There are some usual hazards near the points and islands. From the ramp about 2/3rds of the way down the lake past the lighthouse point there is a spring hole which is out away from land and was marked with a pole so watch for that. The back side of the third (largest island) has a open pressure ridge and its best to go to the west side of the large island being careful to also go to the WEST or left side of the two large rocks near the island (as Walt and Roger will tell you its wet to the right side of the rocks :). Also the point of the cove just to the left or West of the marked hole has an open lead the runs to the North east about 50 yards long and is not apparent until you get right on top of it. Otherwise the lake was in good shape and with the forecast should be good sailing all week.
The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Take Rt 495 to route 105 West towards Lakeville to route 18/105 South towards Freetown at the 18/105 spilt stay on rt 18 towards Freetown. The ramp is on the right a half mile after the Freetown town line.

Conditions Reported for: Winnecunnet, Watuppa, MA

This report was submitted by: John Hughes, () Sail number: , Phone: The Condition Report for Winnecunnet, Watuppa is as follows:

Sailed winnecunnet. A little thin at the edges, but about 7" over most of the pond. Not glassy-smooth, but barely pebbly, either -- really nice ice. Also very hard, which showed me I need to sharpen my runners.

Looked at Watuppa -- several DNs and others were out sailing on gorgeous ice, but the launching area was still locked up. Drove around the pond searching for some other place to launch--no luck, alas. Does anyone know who we contact yo get it opened? I might be coming down with a case of ice-flu this week.

--John

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Winnecunnet: 495 (south of boston); go a little east of 95, and exit on Bay road. Go north about 1/2 mile; see pond and "The Chateau" on the left; park just after the Chateau.

S> Watuppa: In Fall River, MA, just south of I95. Take 24 S from 195, take first exit (Brayton Ave); go L at end of exit. Take 2nd left, and follow it to the end. (it goes over a little bridge and then makes a VERY sharp left...slow down!)

The conditions were near perfect. It rained hard late Friday night and then temperatures dropped turning it glassy smooth. Ice was about 4? to 5? across the whole lake. Small pressure ridges were starting to form, but the whole lake is very sailable. I sailed mostly the south end. There was another DN sailing the full length of the lake north to south and he reported no known hazards.
The directions to the launch site are as follows:

The city launch ramp is closed at this time. Very frustrating to see perfect ice and no good way to access it.

Conditions Reported for: Lake Quanapowitt, Wakefield, MA

This report was submitted by: Rich, (rasmithpe@verizon.net) Sail number: Freeskate, Phone: 617 771 5100 The Condition Report for Lake Quanapowitt, Wakefield is as follows:

60% grey ice, 40% 1/2" styrofoam patches. Last night's 1" snow wetted out enough when it hit the ice to mostly turn to textured snow ice. Freskaters should be able to snake through the remaining snow, Boats should be able to blast through, snowfers or sleds, no problem. I was pleasantly suprised by the amount of sailable ice. Call after noon. I should be sailing by then.

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Conditions Reported for: Nippenicket, Winnecunnet, MA

This report was submitted by: John Hughes, () Sail number: , Phone: The Condition Report for Nippenicket, Winnecunnet is as follows:

Kids and I stopped by Nippenicket, but the surface was a bit rough; since there was not wind, and we were planning to skate, we went on to Winnecunnet. But ice fishermen (3 or 4) were out on Nippenicket, and looking at some cracks from the side made me think we had probably 4"+ of ice.

Winnecunnet seemed similar -- perhaps a little thicker. During our afternoon of play there, we never heard any cracking or crunching at all. The clear patch was a bit thinner, and I didn't have a drill or anyting, so I wasn't comfortable with it, and we stayed off. The kids had no trouble skating on the pond despite it being covered with tiny patches of very light snow. And we set up the little iceboat I made for my daughter, which also moved fine...when pushed :-). There was almost NO wind at all. (sigh).

On the way home, we stopped by the north end of Watuppa. It looked pretty nice, but I didn't get out to check the ice thickness...but the SURFACE looked pretty decent.

Long Pond in the towns of Lakeville and Freetown was scouted on foot by three clubmembers today (too windy to sail) and deemed sailable. This is a HUGE lake at 1,742 acres and there is guaranteed to be some hazards. The good and the bad: The bad news is the first 50 yards of the cove off the state launch is all plate sized chunks of pack ice from last weekends blow. The good news is once you are beyond this the ice is VERY nice. This lake took up almost completely in one shot last Sunday into Monday night. Thicknesses varied today midday from 3" of black ice in the thinner spots to over 4" of black ice in thicker spots. There is some inconsquential snow cover maybe a half inch on 50% of the surface. The lake should make up enough ice to have at least 4"-5" by Saturday morning as the temperartures are to be in the single digits Friday night. They are forecasted to rebound to about 30 degrees saturday and winds are forecasted to be 5-10 out of the south. Being such a large lake take care to watch the pressure ridges throughout the day even if you have already scouted and crossed them. This is new ice and growing and is a living breathing body of water constantly changing. This lake is also known to have a couple of springs so it would be best not to go touring this lake without a buddy system!!!

We will be sailing here Saturday in anticpation of holding the NEIYA on ice tune up clinic here on Sunday. Final confirmation of time and location will be on the hotline Saturday night.
The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Take Route 495 to Exit 4 Route 105 going west or south towards Lakeville. Follow to light at intersection of route 18 where 18&105 merge. Follow 18 & 105 South past Savas, Fire Dept, True Value. Stay on 18 at the spilt going (south/west) towards Freetown (Middleboro road?). The ramp is a short distance on the right just after the Lakeville Freetown town line.

We have been making ice for two days since the previous 4" report, looking to sail the entire lake tomorrow after careful check of traditional funky spots. North end still needs careful check but caught on Monday, plenty of ice made since then with no visible holes or leads.
The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Locals (we) will walk and drill usual funky spots Saturday morning, so check Look in the parking lot behind American Distilling, south end of the lake on Rte 66, or follow West Point Rd, next to the same plant, to an obvious launching spot a few hundred yards away. Short carries both places. Sears Park, off North Main St, would be easier for larger boats, as there is a ramp. Alternate phone Dave Burnham 860-267-8590.

This report was submitted by: Ralph L. Steele, (ra33setawyerrd@comcast.n) Sail number: , Phone: 603-893-6596 The Condition Report for Lake sunapee is as follows:

As reported by Ron Buzzell yesterday the ice is very smooth with about 3/4" light snow on it. wall to wall ice with a few pressure ridges, but safe, no one went through or close to it. We sailed there today with 10 or 11 other boaters from the State Park beach in Newbury. The wind was fairly steady around 15 MPH (guess) and it was my 1st time this season and 1st time with my ice flyer. As long as the snow stay off the ice it will remain good. Becareful, the ice fishermen and the hard water stink-potters will be out in force this week end.

Conditions Reported for: Quannapowitt, MA

This report was submitted by: Rich (reporting for Karl), () Sail number: , Phone: The Condition Report for Quannapowitt is as follows:

Hi Rich,

I sailed today in NW corner: it was fine. Ice 3-4" where I chopped thru. Also looked thick everywhere I cleared off the snow. Very smooth and no air pockets.

There are crack lines where water came up running from the N. shore near the far willows over to the point on Rt. 129. I didn't get to test the thickness there, and didn' t cross them.

I probably can't sail again til Fri.

This report was submitted by: Jeff Soderholm, () Sail number: , Phone: The Condition Report for Quaboag Pond Brookfield is as follows:

A group of us went to Quaboag Pond to scout the ice and brought boats in hopes it would be thick enough to sail. After some preliminary checking it was deemed thick enough to warrent setting up the boats and scouting further. After some further checking we decided it looked good enough and in the end almost a dozen boats and several freeskates enjoyed a fine day of sailing. There are rumors of some possibly going back during the week for more possibly Monday and Wednesday.

I sailed Otter Pond saturday in gale force winds- insane arctic condidtions- not much fun.
Today was much better. The surface was rough- too rough for DNs, BUT! Big Lake Sunapee is frozen shore to shore. I walked out on saturday and cut thru. 3" of black ice with snow blowing off. Saturday night went below zero- surely made ice. By next weekend Sunapee should be ready to go. Not one day is forecast to be over 25F and a couple of nights will be near 0F.

Some iceboats were out on Kezar Pond today- it was smooth enough- we sailed Otter because with skis and Skimbat it doesn't matter what is beneath. Will

Conditions Reported for: Lac Bancour, Thetford Mines, Quebec

This report was submitted by: eric anderson, (eric.anderson@uconn.edu) Sail number: US 5193, Phone: 860.367.7806 The Condition Report for Lac Bancour, Thetford Mines is as follows:

7 DN?s Sailed this weekend at Lake Bancour in Thetford Mines, Quebec this Sunday. This is a small lake just south of Thetford Mines itself. Conditions were ~ 3-4 inches of very hard ice with some snow ice on top. There was a little grit on the ice so runners dulled somewhat as the day went on. It rained lightly all day so the ice was very fast, wind started at ~7 knots, building to 18 as the day went on. I was quite happy to have heavy ?? insterts by days end. Claude Marin, Stephan, and myself scratch raced until we couldn?t hold our heads up any longer.

The great news is that there were at least 5 lakes of varying sizes I passed on Canadian rt 112 on the way to Thetford Mines that were completely frozen. I suspect next weekend may offer good sailing in that region again. From my house in Connecticut, Thetford Mines is about 6 hours driving time. You need your passport though.
