Pacific Coast Highway

West Coast Trip

August 1995
This summer I took my first trip to the west coast. There were two parts to my trip. I first attended the SIGGRAPH (ACM Special Interest Group in Graphics) conference in Los Angeles from August 5 - August 12. Afterwards, I drove up the coast from LA to San Fransico stopping at several places and visiting some friends. This page contains photos from the trip and descriptions of what I was doing at the time the photos were taken.

The photo above is really two pictures. I wish all pictures were panoramic! I scanned the two photos into the computer and then used Photoshop to try and remove the edge that was visible. The 'stamp' tool works very well for this. I actually had to draw in some white foam on the waves along the edge between the two photos because they did not line up quite right. I also had to smooth some of the area in the sea and sky around the edge to blend the two photos together. On an 8-bit display it's hard to see any of the changes I made but on a 24-bit display you'll see them if you look hard. (I'm going to add another version of this photo showing the images before I edited it..)

The image below contains two photos. The top-most is of me in Hollywood with the Hollywood sign in the background. The second one down also shows Dan Robbins(l) and Jeff Beall(r). (BTW, I'm taking the photo with an outreached arm--). It took us about two hours of driving and hiking in the mountainous area you see in the background of the photos trying to get just the right picture where the whole Hollywood sign was visible. (I guess we kind of blew it with the trio-photo as far as getting the sign in the shot.)

Below is a pier I stopped at in Cayucas, CA. I'm planning to combine these three images in Photoshop to get another panoramic photo like the first one on this page.

The next image shows a photo of Rodeo Drive during our drive through Beverley Hills on our way to Santa Monica. The photo is really of the street sign which says 'Rodeo Drive' but it's a bit hard to make out in this photo. Ken Herndon is making faces with a kid in the window of this restaurant. The bottom picture shows a Mammoth stuck in the La Brea tar pit.

Here is a photo from Route #1 North near Santa Monica. The top two pictures are the ones I combined to make the photo at the top of this page. The third one shows a northbound stretch of the highway I liked.

And here is a blown-up version of the last photo above.

Below are three photos of the LA Convention Center with the 'SIGGRAPH '95' banner out front.

This last set of pictures do not really belong on this page but I haven't had a chance to move it to the proper place... Below is a photo of the Center for Information Technology at Brown University. The Computer Science department is located on the 4th and 5th floors.

The bottom two photos are from ESPN's Extreme Games. The downhill luge and downhill roller blade events were held on College Hill in Providence this past summer. (Noah Green and Jeff White are in the third photo).

More to come...
