Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were successful in large part because they were at the right place at the right time. They started Apple and Microsoft at the unique point in time where the advances in computing hardware made personal computing practical.
We are at a new such point in time. We have witnessed sustained and rapid advances in key hardware-related technologies such as wireless communications, processors, storage devices, batteries, human-computer interaction devices, sensors, and positioning technologies. These technologies are right now reaching a level where ubiquitous computing is becoming practical.
The
types of computing and information services that may be envisioned are
both far reaching and highly diverse, as are their perceived benefits
and general impacts on society. Politicians, industry leaders,
researchers, and people in general,
should
recognize that we are at a unique point in time. We should all
seize
the opportunity to bring about ubiquitous computing.
