Research Interest
My current research focus is on
network-centric and mobile data management.
As part of my NSF CAREER Award (1995), we developed PRO-MOTION, a
transactional infrastructure to support disconnected database operations and
extended the notion of database views with personalization to facilitate
customized data information gathering. More recently we have been investigating
cooperative and peer-to-peer protocols for energy-efficient and scalable data sharing.
These include broadcast indexing schemes and multicast-push and muticast-pull
data dissemination protocols.
Foresight
With the emergence of micro sensor
technologies, PDAs and mobile devices will be replaced by mobile personal
networks. Each sensor and embedded processor in these personal networks will be
engaged in multiple and complex interactions within their personal network and with the surrounding
environment. Scalable and flexible data management technologies will be
required to handle these complex interactions
and multiple shared contexts. Such technologies will result from the
integration of database, network and AI techniques. These, coupled with strong
privacy guarantees, will improve every aspect of our life (education, health,
personal relations, business, environment, etc.) and will allow "everyone to make a friend everywhere."
