Project:
The project is a semester-long group effort, which will involve the design and implementation of a DISC application or solution using existing DISC tools and platforms. Individual projects are possible but not ideal.   

Presentations:
There will be group presentations covering a topic each week. Groups will consist of 4 people. The presentation topics are:
  • DISC motivation and applications
  • Parallel programming languages/primitives
  • Data stores
  • Parallel DBMSs
  • Massively Parallel GPGPU programming
  • Database as a Service
The papers for each topic are listed here.

Assignments:
Each week, one paper  will be marked with a "*". You will submit a short review of the marked paper (to ugur@cs.brown.edu) by 2pm of the day it will be covered in class. There will be a total of 6 marked papers; however, you are required to submit only 5 reviews. Additional reviews will earn you extra credit.

The review form you will use is as follows:
  • Summary of the paper (max 3 sentences)
  • Up to three things you learned from the paper (one sentence each)
  • Up to three things that you could do better or would do differently (one sentence each)
Participation:
All participants are strongly encouraged to contribute to the discussion by asking questions, making observations, identifying strengths and weaknesses of the approaches under discussion.
