Main          MOTD          Schedule          Details
Grading:
Participation     15%
Assignments     20%
Presentations    25%
Project             40%

Participation:
You are strongly encouraged to contribute to the discussion by asking questions, making observations, identifying strengths and weaknesses of the approaches under discussion. Critical discussion and analysis are key prerequisites for good systems research.

Assignments:
Assignments will involve critical evaluation of the papers in the reading list. Critical reading of technical papers is a must skill to have in research. You will complete and submit a paper review form (to ugur@cs.brown.edu) before each class by 2pm, for each full-presentation paper. You will be graded on only 8 reviews (you don't have to submit a review for the paper you will present). Each review will be graded on a binary scale: 1 if I am convinced you read the paper and understood the basics; 0 otherwise.

The review form you will use is as follows:
  • Paper name.
  • Reviewer name.
  • Summarize the paper (no more than five sentences).
  • State the primary contribution of the paper (one sentence).
  • State the most important strengths of the paper (no more than three; each in a single sentence).
  • State the most important limitations of the paper (no more than three; each in a single sentence).
  • Rate the paper (on a scale of five).
         5    A must read
         4    Would recommend to others
3    Has a couple of interesting things to say
         2    Only marginally interesting
         1    Waste of time
  • State an important research challenge the paper does not address (no more than three sentences).
Presentations:
Each participant will present twice (one long and one shorter) over the course of the semester. The talk slides will be submitted on the day of the presentation to be posted on the web page. A full presentation is expected to be about 50-60 minutes and a short one about 15-20 minutes.

Project:
The project is a semester-long group effort, which will involve the design and impementation of a CEP application. Individual project are also allowed but discouraged. For more details, see the instructor.
