================================================================ Name: Tim Neal ================================================================ Questions/comments about the syllabus or project handout: None at the moment. ================================================================ Project Title 1: VisEQ Brief Description This project would be an attempt to make a text editor which would focus on making equations look nice(like Latex), except that you would be able to see what the equations looked like in the editor, instead of having to open it up else- where. Identify Local Users: Any students who likes to type up their homeworks with a lot of equations in them and who wants the equations to look nice. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria Useful to others: 5 Has specific users: 5 Can be scaled up to PC product: 4 Divisible: 3 In C++ on Suns: 3 Overall: 4 Pros: Would be very useful to students who use programs such as Latex to type up their homeworks, and would make viewing their equations much easier. Cons: Not sure how easily this could be broken up into sections. ================================================================ Project Title 2: Sunlab IM Brief Description While zwrite is okay, and many people use AOL Instant Messenger, why not make a graphical instant messenging program for the machines in the Sunlab? Features such as buddy lists, buddy information, and even chat rooms could possibly be implemented. Identify Local Users: People who use the computers in the Sunlab. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria Useful to others: 3 Has specific users: 3 Can be scaled up to PC product: 3 Divisible: 3 In C++ on Suns: 3 Overall: 3 Pros: I think it could be much more convenient than trying to use zwrite every time you want to communicate with someone in the sunlab. I personally am not a big fan of zwrite. Cons: Not sure if the size of the program is big enough. ================================================================ Project Title 3: Unix Defender Brief Description Defender of the Crown is an old game in which several teams build armies and battle each other or ally with each other to take over the map, which is divided into around 40 land pieces. The Unix version could implement networking to allow several users to challenge one another in the game. Identify Local Users: Students looking to take a break from coding for a little while. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria Useful to others: 2 Has specific users: 2 Can be scaled up to PC product: 3 Divisible: 4 In C++ on Suns: 4 Overall: 3 Pros: I think that this project can definitely be split up into many different sections. I also think it would be a fun project to implement, and it would incorporate many different fields of computer science. Cons: It does not have any real specific use other than it being something fun to do. ================================================================
