Name: Heather Yazawa ====================================== Questions/comments about the syllabus or project handout: I assume that the Read imperatives mean read by today, not read tonight, correct? ===================================== Project Title 1: Desktop Stickies Brief Description: I remember this program for the PC which would let you type notes in little squares of colored screen and move them around your desktop for virtual post-it notes. I propose something like that, except for the Sun computers. Maybe with added features like the ability to doodle in the notes as well as type, the ability to quickly email them, and the ability to print them. An easy way to store, organize, and retrieve them is necessary too so desktops don't have to be totally plastered. Identify Local Users: I'm a Post-It freak, myself. I love to jot down reminders and stick them around my room. I think this could be useful to the average user if we can devise a way to keep them from obscuring important desktop icons. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria: Useful to others: 4 Has specific users: 3 Can be scaled up to PC product: 5 Divisible: 4 In C++ on Suns: what does this mean??? Overall: 4 Pros: Useful and it's uses don't have to be explained to the unfamiliar. Will be intuitive to use. Cons: If we don't find a way to organize it efficiently, it will only clutter the desktop. People love their wallpapers. ===================================== Project Title 2: Recipe Organizer Brief Description: My Mom desperately needs one. A database for recipes. Quick searches can be done by dietary restrictions (weed out those with too many calories, carbs, and foods that will cause your guest to develop hives), type of meal, holiday, who gave you the recipe. Counts the calories in a dish through adding up calories from individual ingredients. Print and email recipes easily. Reminders to back up database so that Grandma's Favorite Pecan Pie is not lost for all time. Rate recipes and comment on them. Maybe even do smart browsing? If the recipe is online the program will do its best to fill out the categories for you. Identify Local Users: My Mom who prints out recipes from the Food Network page then leaves them around the house. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria: Useful to others: 4 Has specific users: 5 Can be scaled up to PC product: 5 Divisible: 4 In C++ on Suns: what does this mean??? Overall: 4/5 Pros: Appeals to the people on endless diets. Easy way to plan meals. Cons: Must be very, very easy to use or the target audience won't use it. ===================================== Project Title 3: Wake Up Brief Description: I'm having a hard time thinking of non-game programs! This would be something for the college student who leaves his/her computer on all night. It will play a song from your MP3 collection randomly to wake you up. You can record messages to yourself like "Wake up Heather you have an important test today" and play them between the music. It requires a small logic test or something requiring brainpower to shut off, thus preventing oversleeping due to alarm clock abuse. Identify Local Users: College students who don't pay for electricity and thus can keep their computers on all night long. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria: Useful to others: 3 Has specific users: 4 Can be scaled up to PC product: 4 Divisible: 3 In C++ on Suns: what does this mean??? Overall: 3/4 Pros: Wake up to music you actually like! Be reminded of why you have to wake up for added incentive. Cons: Needs more features to be truly useful. Might lead to computer destruction. =====================================
