Come up with at least 3 potential projects. ================================================================ Name: Joseph Fuqua (jfuqua) ================================================================ Questions/comments about the syllabus or project handout: ================================================================ Project Title 1: Operating Mask - Utility for changing interface to Solaris. Would involve loading different packages, changing desktops, window properties, startup properties, drop-down menus, etc. Local Users: All SunLab users (particularly less experienced) Score (1 to 10) Useful to others: 8 Has specific users: 8 Can be scaled up to PC product: 3 (not directly applicable) Divisible: 8 In C++ on Suns: 9 Overall: 8 Pros: Would be very useful as changing properties is very cumbersome and esoteric. Cons: Might be difficult to load different packages during run-time and change their properties through software. ================================================================ Project Title 2: LiveFind - An internet-based MP3 finder. Could be based on a meta search and checking the returned links for actual existence and validity. Local Users: Many Brown students looking for free music Score Useful to others: 9 Has specific users: 6 Can be scaled up to PC product: 8 Divisible: 7 In C++ on Suns: 6 Overall: 7 Pros: This would be a greatly useful program since finding MP3s has become a time-hemmoraging proposition. I would allow people to save lots of time. Cons: Trading MP3s over the internet is still a legal gray-area. We can't really promote lawlessness throught the university, can we? ================================================================ Project Title 3: Senior Shortcuts - A 3-D program that contains a model of most of the buildings on the Brown Campus and their relative position. It allows the user to enter two locations and gives the shortest path between them - including cutting through parking lots, buildings, yards and anything else that stands in the way. Local Users: Brown Students with access to ridiculously fast computers with high quality 3-D hardware. A bit small of a target... Score Useful to others: 7 Has specific users: 5 Can be scaled up to PC product: 8 Divisible: 9 In C++ on Suns: 9 Overall: 7 Pros: This would be cool. It would be neat to find all the shortcuts and see exactly how the Brown Campus is laid out. It would also help determine how long you could stay at breakfast before your first class and how long into a professor running over time you could stay before being late for your next class. Cons: Lots of data gathering. Lots of 3-D modeling. Finding shortest pat algorithms through 3-D space. ================================================================ Project Title 4: Local Users: Score Useful to others: Has specific users: Can be scaled up to PC product: Divisible: In C++ on Suns: Overall: Pros: Cons: ================================================================ Project Title 5: Local Users: Score Useful to others: Has specific users: Can be scaled up to PC product: Divisible: In C++ on Suns: Overall: Pros: Cons: ================================================================
