================================================================ Name: Amy Simpson (asimpson) 1-27 Project Titles ================================================================ Questions/comments about the syllabus or project handout: None as of the moment... ================================================================ Project Title 1: GeoEvents Brief Description: This would provide a visual representation of upcoming events in the Providence area by using the Providence Journal's upcoming events overlaid with Google Maps. Identify Local Users: The Rhode Island public looking for something to do. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria Useful to others: 4 There is a definite use for others, but it would be more 'helpful' and fun than a specifically 'useful' tool. Has specific users: 4 There are Many specific users, however, it would cover a very specific and small area (just the Rhode Island area) of use since it would integrate the projo. It would not, however, be too large of aleap to adapt the project for other areas. Can be scaled up to PC product: 4 Divisible: 3 At this point I'm not sure how specifically divisible it is. There are definitely many, many, fun features that could be added. In C++ in Sunlab (Linux): 4 Overall: 4 Pros: Its a project that has a very visual aspect to it which I think makes it more appealing. There are many fun features that could be added to it to make it more useful for the user. Cons: I'm unsure how it would be divided into parts. Yahoo has a similar service (currently in a demo phase) though not very complete. It may or may not be worth it to create an entirely new item of the same point though a better interface might be worth it. ================================================================ Project Title 2: Bookworm Brief Description: This would create an interface for a local grade school's library. It would allow for checking in and out books and general lookups, etc. for the library. Identify Local Users: The local grade school students and volunteers. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria Useful to others: 5 It would greatly help out a local public school. Has specific users: 5 Can be scaled up to PC product: 4 Divisible: 3 In C++ in Sunlab (Linux): 5 Overall: 4 Pros: It a very specific user group who know exactly what they want and would be very willing to work with us. Cons: I feel as if there is a lot of software out there that does very similar stuff. ================================================================ Project Title 3: Go Fish Brief Description: This project woulf create a program to track fish movements by examining digital images from a fish tank that would be used to test the fish's reaction to visual stimuli. Identify Local Users: The Brown University Department of Neuroscience. Assign a 1-5 score for these criteria Useful to others: 3 This project has a very small user base, but could be very useful in research. Has specific users: 4 This project has VERY specific users. Can be scaled up to PC product: 3 Divisible: 4 This project is probably quite divisible. There is the visual input, the parsing of the information, the calculation and summation of data of all the fish movement data, as well as output interface for the user. (as well as much more that I'm not thinking of yet) In C++ in Sunlab (Linux): 2 Overall: 3 Pros: This is very different from many of the projects. It could be extremely interesting to see the data and to work with something as unique as this project that is currently being created. Cons: The team is only as of now creating the visual stimuli and have not yet set up the computer camera to film the fish's movement. this could cause the testing and even creation of the program extremely difficult. Unlike many projects, it would also be hard to tell when the program is behaving correctly as we, as computer scientists, do not know what to expect from the fish data. ================================================================
