Field Research Writing Assignment

Concept

Find something visual (an object most likely) and describe the experience of viewing it (or using it) with concepts and vocabulary from computer graphics as well as some of the diverse disciplinary approaches we have taken in class (e.g., fine art, design, perceptual science, semiotics/media theory, etc.) The object does not have to be computer-generated. For example, Jim Walker talked about the "digital" nature of medieval painting in his lecture.

For inspiration look around as you walk to classes, consider material in different courses, and take a look back at some of the visual examples shown in lecture slides for this class or discussed in the guest lectures.

Be sure to spell and grammar check, but aside from that don't obsess about the writing (we're not grading on writing for this, just the use of ideas from the course).

Suggested structure

• description of object (what it looks like, creator, dates, usage, etc)
• reaction you have to it
• analysis of your reaction/opinion/thoughts in terms of concepts from
  • computer graphics
  • field 1
  • field 2
  • etc.
• conclusion (how the different perspectives helped (or didn't help) you understand the object).

Logistics

• Due April 19
• The final document should be between 500-1000 words. Pictures are encouraged!
