There is another category of color effects known as Chromatic Induction. Chormatic induction is the tendency for colors to "induce" a tint of their opposing color in neighboring areas.
Look at the image below:
All of the circles are the same shade as the feint orange circle in the middle of the picture. Does the topmost circle appear to be somewhat more red? Does the bottom circle appear to be somewhat more green?
