Server Software
Much of the software that provides system-wide services operates in relative obscurity behind the scenes, usually on a server locked away in a machine room. For the sake of documentation, this page describes that software.
Database

The departmental's database servers run postgresql v. 8.3.

The departmental's email servers run Dovecot, Postfix, and SpamAssassin.
FTP

The department's FTP servers run wu-ftpd, a powerful, flexible and secure open-source ftp server software originally developed at Washington University. Wu-ftpd is the most popular ftp daemon on the Internet.
Mailing Lists

The department's mailing list servers run the Sympa mailing list server software. Sympa manages email discussion lists and features an integrated web interface.
Virtual Private Network

The department's VPN servers run OpenVPN to provide secure connections and tunneling support to users in the outside world.
