VPN Setup for Windows

The following is a step-by-step guide to connecting to the department VPN using Windows.

  1. Download and install the openvpn-2.1.4-install.exe from the internal web server.

  2. Download and install the BrownCS client certificate and config, browncs-openvpn.msi from the internal web server.

  3. During installation choose the default setting for all prompts.

  4. In the start menu, click on All Programs.

  5. Click on OpenVPN folder.

  6. To start the OpenVPN client, right-click on the OpenVPN GUI icon and choose Run as Administrator:

  7. The OpenVPN client starts and creates an icon at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

  8. To log in to the CS vpn server, right-click on the OpenVPN GUI icon at the bottom right-hand corner and choose browncs->Connect. Alternatively, choose browncs-gateall->Connect, which routes all Internet traffic through the VPN. This allows you to access Brown Library resources, but may be slower, so only choose it if necessary.

  9. The OpenVPN User Authentication will appear. Enter your CS login and LDAP password into the appropriate section:

  10. Click on the OK button to log in.

  11. You are now connected through the CS VPN. To disconnect, right-click on the OpenVPN GUI icon in the bottom right of your screen and choose Disconnect.
