Nediyana Daskalova

I am a fourth year PhD student at the Department of Computer Science, at Brown University. My advisor is Jeff Huang, and I am a part of the Human-Computer Interaction research group. My research interests are in human-computer interaction and self-tracking with a special focus in sleep-tracking and self-experiments.

I am originally from Bulgaria with a computer science degree from Grinnell College in Iowa.

Currently, I am doing research on how to improve people's sleep habits. I am working on a sleep tracking application, SleepCoacher, that will help people improve their sleep by providing them with personalized recommendations.

Check out my CV here.

  • Sept 15, 2017: I am presenting the Cohorts of Self-Experimenters: Lessons Learned from Personal Informatics Self-Experiments" paper at Ubicomp in Maui, Hawaii.

  • Apr 3, 2017 - June 30, 2017: I was an intern on the Health Team of Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA.

  • Feb 1, 2017: We had one full paper and two case studies accepted to CHI 2017, based on work completed during my internship at Yahoo. The paper, "If a person is emailing you, it just doesn't make sense": Exploring Changing Consumer Behaviors in Email, was co-authored with Frank Bentley and Nazanin Andalibi.

  • Nov 1, 2016: I am looking for a research internship related to health, behavior change, self-tracking, and self-experiments.

  • Oct 18, 2016: I presented the SleepCoacher paper at UIST in Tokyo, Japan on Oct 18, 2016.

Current Research Projects

  • We developed a system, SleepCoacher, which guides users through single-case experiments by collecting raw mobile sensor data and generating personalized, data-driven sleep recommendations based on a collection of templates recommendations created with input from clinicians.

  • We developed a set of guidelines for running self-experiments based on two cohorts of students. We present these guidelines for future self-experiments and designers of self-experimentation tools.
