About Ugur
Tell us a little about your background: educational, professional, personal, etc.
I received my undergraduate and masters degrees in Turkey and then came to University of Maryland for my doctoral studies. I joined Brown right after I completed my PhD in 2001.
What do you focus on in your research? Any recent advances?
My work strives to facilitate the management and analysis of data under challenging situations, for example, when there is lots of data or scarce computing resources. For the last few years, I have worked on tools and systems that can quickly process and analyze high-rate data streams. I am now moving on towards supporting big data and self-managing systems.
What do you like teaching classes about?
I like to teach classes that draw on principles and mechanisms from several sub-areas of computer science, such as databases, distributed systems and networking. For the last three years, I have also enjoyed teaching a freshman class on introduction to computer science.
How did you become interested in computer science?
Primarily through computer games.
What is your favorite thing about Brown?
Great colleagues and students who are passionate about what they do and happy about being here.
Any hobbies or passions?
My interests change all the time but one can always attract my attention by mentioning competitive sports, especially soccer.
