"Data data blah blah blah -- good Computer Science and even engineering is all about code and theory." Maybe, maybe not -- looking past the trendy phrase "Big Data," what can we CS types learn from the first studies of epidemics and the development of "data science?" How can academics, start-ups, and established firms benefit from a more expansive, data-flavored view of CS and engineering? This talk structures and surveys the opportunity and suggests which theories, patterns, and practices are most relevant and immediately applicable.
