Reaction for: Recommended Curriculum for CS1, 1984 by Lucas

Some things never change.

To me, it doesn't seem as if this outline promotes a significant alteration in methodology compared with what we have today in computer science. The proposed minimum requirements, style, structure, creative problem solving and algorithm development/analysis, and basic CS concepts -- all these things are covered within a potential CS concentrator's first year (in the 15/16 track -- I don't know enough about 4/5 .. 5 is not intended as a replacement for 16, correct? It's just a completion of sorts to the 15-equivilance of cs4?). All of these are similar, except for laboratory work. Every article we've dealt with this week has discussed the necessity of lab work to some degree -- why has Brown not implemented this? I'd like to hear the administration's view -- I gather that it was a conscious decision. What was it's motivation?
