Recall the Fourier Transform and how we might represent an image in the frequency domain.
When detectable, high frequency, short wavelength components will dominate the perception of a signal.
At a distance, however, only low frequency, long wavelength components will be detectable.
One can exploit these two facts to create two main optical illusions.
Composite images to be viewed at a single scale.
Metamorphic images to be viewed at multiple scales, usually 2.
