the Rise of the Machines: A Survey of Financial Software Architectures

As in most industries, computer technology has radically changed the face of the financial markets. By some estimates more than half of the trades in the US equity markets are software trading with software. The US market alone generates five gigabytes of new data every day. I'll first provide an overview of the business and regulatory issues that are driving software requirements. I'll then give an overview of the technologies that are allowing market participants to process and understand this flood of information.
